Woodworth - Morton

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Review, ? 1881

Wednesday morning, Mort Woodworth and Milt Clark, wishing to  get at some stone near the W. side track of the LNA & CRR at  the old depot and there being the freight cars in the way did not  wait for an engine to come to their assistance, but it being down  grade they attempted to move them by hand with the aid of some  crowbars. The grade being rather heavy the cars started at a  rapid rate, and wishing to check their head was a large standard  belonging to a freight wagon was placed on the track and the men  climbed on the forward car to put down the brake. While they were  thus occupied the car struck the standard, snapping the brake  chain in two and threw Woodworth off and under the car, which  passing over him crushed both legs at the knee, his arms and  broke several ribs and was also severely cut about the face. He  was carried to his residence on N. Green St. in a semi-conscious  condition and Drs. Ensminger, Keegan, Cowan and Montague  summoned. but he was beyond the help of medical aid and died in  about two hours after the accident. The deceased was born in  Brookville, Franklin County, this state and was 56 years of age. He  was well known to all our citizens, having been a teamster here  for many years. He was a quiet, law abiding citizen and was known  to be a good, square honest man, generous to a fault in all his  dealings. His cheery, happy voice, which was ao often the subject  of comment, will be sadly missed. He leaves a wife and two sons,  both grown to man estate, to mourn his sad, untimely death.
